Our Story and Commitment to Sustainability

Hello I'm Marilee, the creator behind Twislee—a brand born from my deep respect for both the environment and traditional craftsmanship. My journey began in lockdown when we were all searching for mindful activities to distract ourselves from what was happening in the world. I have since been sharing the techniques I have learned to encourage everyone, from beginners to experienced makers, to slow down and enjoy the meditative process of creating handmade macrame pieces using time-honoured techniques.

I developed my own range of Twislee single twist yarns to reflect my values of sustainability and mindful making. These yarns are proudly made in the UK from 100% recycled cotton, sourced from surplus textile materials. The production process is powered by renewable energy, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint. While organic cotton is better than conventional alternatives, it doesn't address the 92 million tonnes of annual textile waste. By using recycled cotton, we help cut down on new material use, reduce emissions and water consumption, and keep textiles out of landfills.

Twislee yarns are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning every thread is tested for harmful substances, guaranteeing their safety for both people and the planet. With no dyes, no chemicals, and a commitment to responsible manufacturing, I aim to make environmentally friendly crafting accessible to all.     FSC certified oak dowels are sourced from a UK supplier.

    Where possible, packaging is purchased from UK suppliers.

  • No wool, leather or any animal products are used in our macrame.

    Did you know not all adhesives, stickers & inks are vegan? A lot of research has been undertaken to ensure everything is 100% vegan & cruelty free

  • The oak dowels I use are FSC certified. Something I am incredibly proud of as these are typically not sustainably sourced.

    The cardboard packaging, wood wool (an eco friendly alternative to shredded paper), packing tapes, tissue paper, stickers, business/thank you cards are all made from sustainable materials.

  • Twislee 100% recycled cottons are made using excess materials from the textile industry, and are made using renewable energy sources in the UK.

    I aim for all cardboard packaging, packing tapes, tissue paper, business cards, stickers to be biodegradable, recyclable and plastic free.

  • Twislee yarns contain no dyes.

    All dowels used are FSC certified solid oak and are chemical free (most driftwood has to be chemically treated or bleached).

    No glues, setting agents, fixing sprays etc. are used.

  • An incredible amount of research has been undertaken to ensure all products and the packaging they are delivered in are plastic free.
